Annotation
Sarah and her family arrive from Singapore, with Sarah unhappy but getting on with her life. When she eats a yam cake during the Festival of the Hungry Ghosts, the angry ghost Pei changes everything for her. Once impatient with Chinese superstitions, Sarah now develops a sense of duty and helps Pei, who was killed when young after journeying to Australia in the 1850s. A blended story of the exotic, family life, school, historical settings and Chinese arrivals during the gold rush.
