Annotation

Nam-Huong has arrived by boat and longs to find her mother and father. Traumatised by losing them and the death of her grandfather, she can only cry ‘onion tears’ when cutting onions, but she writes letters to the yellow canary she left behind. Sampson the dog and Miss Lily, her sympathetic teacher, help her to express her pent-up emotions.
