Then Series: Felix and Zelda book 2
Felix befriends Zelda who, at only six years of age, has experienced the loss of her parents who were Nazis sympathisers, killed by the Polish resistance. Feisty Zelda is more aware than the still naïve Felix, who retains his positive outlook. The children jump from a train bound for the death camps and search for safety. Then gives additional background of life in Poland, including rationing, the Hitler Youth and the SS squads. Genia, a Polish farmer, gives them protection. The ending of this novel has an inevitability given the times, but is nonetheless devastating. The concepts of how people are socialised into accepting and practicing prejudice and persecution suggest adult support may be needed.
