Jackie French AM is a proud Ambassador and advocate on behalf of the National Centre for Australian Children’s Literature. She is a staunch campaigner for the right of every child to read and have the books they need. She promotes this message through her wide interests which include ecology, gardening, pest control and wombats and her many patronages.

Jackie is a firm believer in the power of story to change lives. As an author she has published more than 200 books for young people which have been translated into over 30 languages. Her books, Diary of a Wombat, illustrated by Bruce Whatley, has been translated into 23 languages and is the only picture book to win the Australian Book Industry Award.

Jackie has won more than 60 Awards in nationally and internationally.  A large number of her books have been shortlisted for Australian and American Awards.

Australian Library and Information Association Redmond Barry Award
Australian Book Industry Pixie O’Harris Award

Jackie was selected as  Australian Children’s Laureate in 2014-15. In 2015 she was recognised as Senior Australian of the Year. For her contributions to Australian Children’s Literature she has been awarded a Member of the Order of Australia
