This is the story of one of Australia’s most significant and famous artists, Albert Namatjira and the creative impetus his work gave to the development of the Hermannsburg watercolour artists. Albert Namatjira was born at Hermannsburg Mission in Central Australia in 1902. He always loved to draw and was helped by a city artist Rex Battarbee who Albert guided on a painting trip through Central Australian country. Albert Namatjira became an acclaimed artist across the world, his art found in many major galleries and private collections, however his heart and longing was always for his family and country.
Albert’s story is told in his language, Western Arrarnta and in English and through the vivid illustrations created by the children of Ntaria (Hermannsburg), Ipolera and Red Sand Hill communities. The book has significant additional information including a Namatjira family tree and family photos, a map and photos of Ntaria (Hermannsburg) and the surrounding country, information on the Hermannsburg Watercolour Artists, a page of painting tips and activities and a pronunciation guide to some Western Arrarnta words. None of Namatjira's paintings are included though there is a list of reference works provided on p.62.
The Western Arrarnta text was written by Albert’s granddaughter and artist, Lenie Namatjira. Many of Albert’s descendants are well-known artists. The English text was written by Damien Karmholtz, a lecturer in visual and expressive arts at the University of Southern Queensland.
