Annotation
Inspired by her time spent teaching in remote Aboriginal schools in Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia, Jill McDougal has written a collection of poems and rhymes that was shaped by and reflects her students’ rich and varied lives.
Hunting goannas and kangaroos, playing football and camping at night, each poem is accompanied by appealing watercolour and ink illustrations. Animals and insect life from cheeky camp dogs to buzzy blowflies feature in a number of humorous poems designed for group performances.
While the overall tone of the collection is lively and upbeat, several poems also address the harsh realities of health and substance abuse issues that affect some children and their families.
