Annotation
Maddie loves to sing and she also loves whales – especially their song. She is very excited to go on a road trip with her mother and grandmother to see humpback whales. A series of mishaps along the way threatens to make it impossible for the family to see the whales but their long trip is rewarded at the end.
The book, like a number of others from Sally Morgan, is designed for newly-independent readers and is divided into easily accessible chapters. Readers will identify with the feeling of anticipation so strongly drawn through the eagerness of Maddie to reach their destination. The vastness of the Western Australian coastline is also clear from the descriptions of the stages of the journey. Craig Smith’s energetic black-and-white illustrations appear on every page. Sally Morgan belongs to the Palku and Nyamal peoples of the Pilbara region.
