Annotation
Broome composers and musicians, Jimmy Chi and Michael Manolis, have written this simple narrative, based on Manolis’ song Fishing, about a sister and brother who discover that the true secret to writing songs and becoming musicians themselves is to follow their friend Gary’s advice and '… write about the things you know.' When Becky and Matthew go on a fishing expedition with Uncle Tommy and their extended family, they dig for bait, feel the tug of a fish on the line and gather shell-fish to cook over the coals. The sounds, smells and textures make their way into a song that captures the joy and spontaneity of their day.
Bringing together themes about the importance of family relationships and the preservation of cultural traditions and practices and celebrating the distinctive Broome music community, this picture books is enhanced with full colour photographs depicting the children and their family fishing, cooking and learning together. Published as part of a kit with accompanying sound cassette and teachers notes.
