Annotation
'Campfire Dreaming' is a rather literal expression of the Dreaming and the transmission of elder knowledge to the next generation. Young Henry sits by the campfire, listening to his grandfather telling the story of the emu. But Henry soon nods off, wondering about the time to come when he will tell stories of the past. Soon he is dreaming, literally, about a journey where he encounters a river that transforms into a giant water snake. He tastes bush tucker – native berries and ‘fat juicy witchetty grubs’. He rides a giant kangaroo into the desert and finds water beneath the dry ground.
Illustrator Debbie Taylor’s mostly figurative artwork employs some loose dot and line work in a generic style and is printed on high gloss paper. The textual narrative highlights some familiar images of Indigenous culture. Debbie Taylor's roots are with the Kamilaroi (or Gamilaraay) people of the Riverine region of northwest NSW.
