Created by Sally Morgan and her daughter Ambelin Kwaymullina, this small colourful book is filled with positive statements designed for young girls a to read and be encouraged to ‘fly’.
Life can be difficult for young girls just beginning to grow into womanhood. Bodily changes, social groups, family, and school can have a powerful, but not always positive effect on how young girls see themselves. This book aims to counter that by asking questions and pointing out truths about worries such as ‘are other people better than you.’ How you act and what you say are powerful actions and girls are encouraged to always be kind and fair, to use their words with kindness and helpfulness, respect others but also respect themselves and their boundaries.
Wherever you are let your light shine brightly, your imagination be unlimited, and your future will be amazing because ‘Girls can fly.’
This book was created with feedback on the words from participants in the Kimberley Girl and Pilbara Girl pathways and leadership programs. These programs are designed to instigate positive change for young Indigenous women. Participants have increased self-awareness and are exposed to new and different lifestyles and opportunities returning to their communities as positive role models.
