The story opens with a big welcome - ‘Baby’s first day home hooray!’ and a mirror to say hello to baby and family together. Each double page spread features the story in English and Mudburra language while below the text is a footprint border artwork. Opposite the text there are various scenes of mum, baby, family and friends. This short and concise book presents the traditional Aboriginal way of life including ceremonies and traditions such as smoking the baby, bush medicine and family and friend gatherings. Occasional rhyming lines add to a pleasurable read aloud sharing experience.

The story and images in ‘Welcome Home Baby’ were created by the Elliott community with the aim of helping young mothers raise their babies in a healthy way. The story and artworks have been developed through community discussion and workshops held at Elliott Library and Kulumindini Arts. Murburra is one of four languages spoken in the region. An audio CD is included which contains these four songs: ‘Welcome Home Baby’, ‘Bush Tucker Song’, ‘Heads and Shoulders’ and ‘Gospel Song’.
