Annotation
'My Country' celebrates the connection between Indigenous Australians and the land through a simple lyrical text and vibrantly coloured, engaging illustrations.
Created by mother and son, award winning author illustrator Sally Morgan and Ezekiel Kwaymullina, this picture book was inspired by Kwaymullina's grandmothers' love of and respect for country and the natural world making a lasting impression on the author from childhood.
A young child names and plays with the sun, moon and wind, slides down a rainbow, splashes with the animals of the Australian bush and dreams among the ghost gums. The naively-styled pencil and mixed media full-bleed illustrations make the intangible tangible for the youngest reader. Singing the earth’s song, the child perches on rocks and calls across a double page spread bursting with colour, pattern and symbols from traditional Aboriginal art.
The author and illustrator belong to the Palyku people from the eastern Pilbara region of Western Australia. 2012 CBCA Book of the Year Awards Notable Book.
