‘Ngawa Pupini Ngarimuwu Nginingawurla Wartiyanginila Amintiya Mirripaka Yinkiti’ in English translates as ‘We Love Our Bush and Seafood’. The book, created by the Milikapiti Families as First Teachers program, presents in a neat square board book format perfect for sharing with young children and teaching about some of the animals both land and sea that can be found in the Tiwi Islands.
The text is minimal presenting just one fact about the particular animal such as ‘Dugong is fat’ or ‘Crab has two claws’. The book’s illustrations are very colourful in design, palette and personality are a clever return and reuse from an earlier ILF publication ‘No Way Yirrikipayi’ created by children of Milikapiti School and facilitated by Alison Lester.
The Indigenous Literacy Foundation believe it is important that First Nations children see themselves, their language and their Culture reflected in the books they read. Having books that share local stories in First Languages, preserves and maintains Indigenous languages and culture, as well as builds pride, identity and strengthens a sense of belonging, confidence and wellbeing. ‘Ngawa Pupini Ngarimuwu Nginingawurla Wartiyanginila Amintiya Mirripaka Yinkiti’ was created as part of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation’s Community Literacy Programs.
