Nine teenage girls from the Tiwi Islands feature in this joyful celebration of pride in their Culture. This book is part of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation’s Creative Initiative Program delivered in Sydney to improve literacy skills of young Indigenous girls still at school.
The girls were supported on this project by ILF Ambassador Dr Anita Heiss who ran writing workshops and author Pamela Freeman who assisted and mentored the girls. Each girl features with two double page spreads including their personal photograph, a few photographs of their visits to iconic places in Sydney followed by their personal story including their love of family, music and sporting heroes. The headings for these personal stories include ‘My Hero,’ ‘My Proudest Moment,’ ‘My Sacred Place’ and ‘My Happiest Moment.’ Each girl writes a personal postcard home revealing their excitement over their new experiences. Pride and a passion for their Culture shines through.
Valuable features include a map of the two islands, Melville and Bathurst, and a glossary of 24 Tiwi words.
