Annotation
‘Old Days’ is a bilingual picture book written in both Western Arrarnta and English. It features the creator’s memories of growing up between Iwupataka (Jay Creek), Ntaria (Hermannsburg) and her mother’s Country at Tempe Downs. Williams recollects her life as a child with memories of special places, activities and observations of animals and birds that lived within the surrounding countryside. The endpapers set the scene for her lively recollections of daily activities. With each illustration filled with tiny details, the author cleverly asks a ‘hunt and find’ question, such as, ‘Can you see the lizard lying on the rock?’
As a member of the Tangentyere Artists group from 2017, Majorie ‘Nunga’ Williams developed a style of figurative landscape painting that reveals her early memories on Country. The Uplands Art Centre describes Marjorie ‘Nunga’ Williams’ art this way: ’Nunga cleverly uses vibrant colours and exaggerated proportions to make apparent the hive of activity present in these places. Soaring eagles, goannas, echidnas, and horses are brought to the forefront of her expansive landscapes.’
There is a guide to Western Arrarnta pronunciation plus a QR code to hear Majorie ‘Nunga’ Williams pronouncing Arrarnta words.
