Book 3 in the 'Game Day' series sees Patty chosen for the team to represent Canberra in the East Coast under twelves basketball tournament, at the same time as his Athe’s (grandad’s) birthday celebration in the Torres Strait. With his parents' support, he decides to stay for the tournament and go to the Torres Strait afterwards. While they are training however Patty injures his ankle and he must rest if he is to make the tournament.
While his fitness is in question after he returns to the court, his leadership skills are not and he puts them to work for his team. This is an engaging novel for independent readers that will also do well as a class read aloud.
Patty Mills, with Jared Thomas, expresses both his love and respect for basketball and his Aboriginal and Torres Strait heritage, giving readers a glimpse into both worlds. Professional basketball player Patty Mills was born in Canberra and his father is from the Torres Strait while his mother is from the Kokatha people in South Australia. Jared Thomas is a Nukunu person of the Southern Flinders Ranges.
