Bronwyn Bancroft is a leading Indigenous artist, descended from the Bundjalung people, who was born in Tenterfield, northern New South Wales. She is one of seven children of her Aboriginal father and Scottish/Polish mother. She vividly tells the story of the house in Lionsville where she grew up. She introduces the old house built by her grandfather, the garden planted by her grandmother and remembers details of what was cooked in the kitchen, how mail was delivered and how children slept under the stars. She reminisces about the men who worked in the mines and the boys who went to war.
Most of all she encourages readers to cherish old people and listen to their stories so that they can one day share their own. The text is simple and engaging and full of nostalgia and the illustrations are a mix of painting and photographs, which make it a fascinating.
