Maggie and her mother are at Parliament House to listen to the National Apology made to the Stolen Generations and their families, by Kevin Rudd, the Prime Minister. As the excitement builds and people become quiet, Maggie is lost in the crowd. She is quickly found by her mother.
Running parallel to this narrative is the historical story of young Aboriginal children playing, and then hiding from the white man who have come to take them away. While Maggie's narrative is illustrated in colour, the historical narrative is in sepia tones. This evokes not only an historical perspective, but also a much sadder tone.
At the back of the book is a brief history leading up to the National Apology, including photos from the National Apology in 2008. The illustrations, by Dub Leffler, a descendant of the Bigambui people of south-west Queensland, are detailed and express the settings and emotions of both times depicted. Coral Vass is a non-Indigenous creator.
