Annotation
This is an exuberant story about a young girl and her grandfather who sneak out at night to climb the staircase to the moon––a natural phenomenon that occurs in Broome in Western Australia between March and October every year. Together, they face many challenges, including mozzies, monsters, bats and muddy mangroves. With its naïve, cartoon-style illustrations, this story creatively captures the Broome landscape and the importance of intergenerational family interactions and Aboriginal belief systems.
The book has been adapted into musical theatre by Gwen Knox. Bronwyn Houston is descended from the Nyiyaparti and the Yindijibarndi people in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
