Set in the Dreaming, this is the story of when the cocky and the crow shared one husband, the hawk. Every morning they would gather food, the hawk hunting animals while the cocky and the crow gathered bush tucker. When the hawk returned, the best meat was shared with the crow. The cocky received lean pieces and she became very skinny.
Eventually this caused the cocky and crow to fight. Cocky threw crow into the hot campfire coals and she became black. In retaliation the crow threw cocky into the now cool coals, and she became white. Hawk was scorched when embers flew on to his feathers, and he became grey and brown. Ever since, the cocky hunts alone, while the hawk and crow hunt together and share the food they find.
