This book is much more than a counting book in Gunwinggu and English. It features 12 beautiful cross-hatched ( Rarrk) artworks that present a window into the ecology of West Arnhem Land and the interconnectedness of Gunwinggu indigenous culture. There are fascination facts to accompany each animal and readers will see the Gunwinggu words for numbers and animals. The text in English is descriptive and rhythmic - “One crocodile with many sharp teeth, two snake-necked turtles swimming in a billabong, three water goannas soaking up the sun... “. Its purpose was to teach children to count, but it shares the culture in a very accessible way for children as well as adults.

Gabriel Maralngurra ancestry is Kudjekbinj, north east of Gunbalanya in West Arnhem Land.
