Dogs of every variety live in Yakanarra, the small community located in the foothills of the St George Ranges between the Fitzroy River and the Great Sandy Desert in Central Kimberley, Western Australia.
In this slim bilingual picture book, written and illustrated by the junior students of Yakanarra Community School students under the guidance of author-illustrators Alison Lester and Jane Godwin, snoopy dogs steal shoes, swimming dogs dive deep in the river for cherabin, sleeping dogs lay in cool places and the hungry dog bites and fights.
The descriptive text written in English and translated into Walmajarri, by school teachers and local elders Mary Vanbee and Jessie Moora, echoes the children’s voices and is complemented by the playful and vividly coloured mixed media illustrations of variously shaped dogs up to all sorts of antics.
