Annotation
Two books, ‘Tiwi Girl’ (2015) and ‘Nginingawila Ngirramini: Our Story’ (2015), have been combined, expanded and republished as Tiwi Girl and Other Stories.
Tiwi Girl is the story of Mia who lives with her family at Purnalli Outstation on Melville Island with her family. Mia particularly enjoy fishing and hunting for bush tucker. She is a weekly boarder at the high school, Tiwi College where she enjoys singing, playing football and being with her friends. Unfortunately Mia makes some bad choices and is sent home much to the disappointment of her grandmother, Maningawu Joy. The story covers issues such as the Stolen Generation, the basic (or welfare) card, smoking and drinking as well as the hopes and dreams of teenagers. Fortunately Mia works her way through her problems and goes in the Tiwi Talent Time with an exciting dream come true moment.
This updated edition also includes real life stories from the teenagers who wrote this book. Like most teenagers they write about their hopes, dreams, heroes and goals. But differently to most teenagers they write about living on an island and searching for bush tucker. This little book also includes information about skin names, a map of the Tiwi Islands and a detailed glossary as well as information about the book’s authors and the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
Tiwi College is a weekly boarding college located at Pickertaramoor on Melville Island. The original edition of ‘Tiwi Girl’ was written by ten of the college students and this later edition was created by the whole senior class supported by teachers and mentor Alison Lestor. ‘Nginingawila Ngirramini’ by created in a workshop in Sydney with eight Tiwi College students mentored by Dr Anita Heiss and author Pamela Freeman.
