Annotation
Specifically aimed at Torres Strait Islander children, this story carries a strong message about the importance of listening to your elders and doing the right thing. Wandihnu lives in the city and she is about to travel to Badu Island in the Torres Strait to visit her aka––her grandmother. The night before she leaves, she dreams about how her reluctance to learn the local language of the Waikait people––Kala Laya Ya––nearly leads to the death of her beloved aka. She is only saved when Wandihnu learns to speak the langage she needs to communicate with the Old Dugong. When she leaves for her visit to the island, Wandihnu is determined to listen to what the elders have to teach her.
Author Elizabeth Wymarra was born on Thursday Island in Torres Strait. Illustrator Benjamin Hodges is of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent.
