This collection of 14 brief short stories includes equal numbers in the Walmajarri language and in English. Each story is surrounded by a motif drawn from the larger artwork opposite. Each artwork is executed in striking scraperboard in black and white surrounded by a black border.
The opening page includes a map showing the Kadinina Community location and a short comment from Yankana (Madeline) Laurel, the collector of these stories and one of the illustrators. She talks about the importance of telling her people’s stories in her Walmajarri language. The content of the stories in English features the land, the people and the creatures that live there and their relationships with each other. Some of the topics covered are hunting for food, land formations and a story about police and Aboriginal trackers hunting and killing Aboriginal people. Some of these stories require an adult intermediary. A Walmajarri Pronunciation guide is included.
This book would complement two books for a younger age group that have been written and illustrated by students in both Walmajarri and English by the Yakanarra Community School. These include ‘A Yakanarra Day - Wangki Yakanarrajangka’ and ‘The Yakanarra Dogs - Yakanarrajangka Kunyarrwarnt’, both published by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
