Based on the life of Rachel Pratt, an Australian army nurse who served in France during World War 1, ‘Rachel’s War ‘is a beautiful picture book about a young nurse working in terrible conditions to nurse the sick and wounded. At the end of the book is a note about Rachel and other Australian nurses and the lack of recognition they received as veterans. The book gives detailed descriptions about the horrific conditions on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Over 156,000 Australian soldiers were wounded or gassed during WW1 and they were cared for by fewer than 3,000 nurses. The nurses assisted Turkish soldiers as well as Australian soldiers, anyone who needed care.
