Milly says her town is so nice they named it twice, but Gong Gong has a problem - people keep leaving. Dad says it’s because it is a long way from anywhere. Mum says it’s because there are more jobs in the city. And the netball team is running out of players!
At school, the class learn about refugees with nowhere to live and the netball girls decide to invite them to live in their town. At Grandma’s suggestion they make a video to accompany Milly’s letter and scenes from the video are woven throughout the narrative.
The invitation is sent then they wait, and they wait, and they wait until one day there is a sound – a car! ‘Refugees! Lots and lots of refugees.
A lovely story of how one girl, one netball team, one family help both a country town in need of people and people in need of a new and safe home. A community rebuilt.
The artwork is colourful and expressive and provides throughout a real sense of community and helpfulness. The differing endpapers show the impact the new arrivals make, the front showing a beautiful but empty countryside, the back endpapers showing a different palate of colours but a town brimming with people and activity.
