Ganda Singh, an Indian hawker, makes his way along the Murray River during the hard days of the Depression. Travelling with him are tough young Griff and his lively cousin, Bronwen. When Griff's father, Will, insists the unemployed should be allowed to ride free on the freight trains, there is conflict with the police in this adventure tale.
