Mama wraps new-born Salim in her rea shawl and sets out with their donkey to find a safer place. The journey is long and arduous through the dusty desert and over the snow-covered mountains until finally they arrive somewhere to take refuge. Through the long days Salim grew bigger, and his games grew more elaborate building and creating various toys even a ball made from wrapped plastic bags though he dreamed of having a real ball.
One day playing the ‘giddy-up game’ Salim and Mama meet Zada who welcomes them and when the cold came she helped Mama make warm shawls to keep Salim and herself warm. Most welcome is the present from Zada of a book for Salim, something completely new to him. Slowly he learned the new sounds and words and soon he was sharing the story with others under his Mama’s red shawl.
