People coming to Australia from other countries sometimes struggle to fit into a new and different culture as so many things are different. Here we learn of a venture in Mildura, country Victoria where a food co-op, assists refugees and immigrants to work together supported by the local community. African migrants in particular are encouraged to use their farming background and to grow their traditional foods. They work together, planting the crops, sharing the food and selling to the wider community. Soon everyone feels like family and ‘we are home’.
Food Next Door Co-op is a farming cooperative based in Mildura, Victoria. Their aim is to foster early social and economic participation among refugees and migrants, enabling them to create sustainable relationships and livelihoods. They bridge traditional farming practices with new opportunities and create a nurturing environment and community integration.
The book is bilingual with the text also in both Swahili and Kirundi languages.
