The text opens with this question: ‘Have you ever wondered what we don’t know?’ Ever had an extremely curious child who had a million questions or whose only response was, ‘I don’t know’ when you asked them a question? ‘I wonder’ is a book suitable for children (adults will find it fascinating too) of all ages. The book contains several thought-provoking questions, most without answers as yet. This book presents a fascinating way to teach the Australian curriculum general capabilities, ‘Critical and creative thinking’ and ‘Sustainability’ from junior primary to secondary school.

‘I wonder’ contains 24 ‘I wonder’ questions, beginning at the start of time with a question about the big bang. Each question also contains details about what we do know about the question and some information about why we don’t have the exact answer yet or may never know the answer. The questions are captivating and can lead to some fascinating conversations with children about their thoughts on the question.

The digitally created illustrations in the book link the illustrations with the text in clever ways, invariably intriguing and often thought provoking. In typical Philip Bunting style, the illustrations feature a quirky sense of humour, the unexpected and often set us thinking, ‘What’s this?’ Illustrations are brightly coloured, bold with cartoon style representations of humans, animals and objects. The endpapers are a tantalising array of thought-provoking and often humorous objects to make readers question, ‘What’s that?’
