Young people worldwide are rightly concerned about climate change and the impact it is having on their futures. Higher temperatures, rising sea levels, warming ocean temperatures and the increase in both the frequency, and ferocity of severe weather events, all will have a significant impact on their health, economic prospects and the ability to lead a safe and stable life.
In an expression of solidarity with the young people leading the Climate Change Revolution, Andrew Joyner has created a deceptively simple book designed to inspire young people into action in the fight against climate change. The story follows a young primary aged girl who, after participating in a well-attended and positive climate change rally, becomes distraught on seeing the environmental destruction stories on the evening news. With the support of her parents, she sets out to be a force for positive climate action in her community. A double gatefold spread shows how her action has motivated her local community to be involved in practical and beneficial activities to help in the fight against climate change and improve the environment.
The sparse text very cleverly uses just two-word phrases all ending with ‘up.’ This approach creates a powerful motivating message on the impact one person can make. The digitally created artwork is mostly black, pale grey and white with pops of bright green that works well to fill out the book’s message. Furthering the message, the book’s jacket cover is designed to open out and double as a sign ‘Marching for my Future’ for the next climate change rally.
At the back of the book is a double page spread of illustrations and information about young people from around the world who are active in ‘Standing up! and Speaking up!’ about climate change This is a book that gives a simple yet powerful message on how to actively work for towards positive change for the climate and our environment and a great starting place for discussions in classrooms, in families and in the wider community.
