‘Tiny Dancer’ is described as a ‘gentle fable about living life to the full.’ This tiny dancer is a mayfly with only a single day to live. Both art and words invite the reader to experience this one memorable day in unforgettable words and images. The images are ethereal—mystical and realistic simultaneously—so the experience generated by this book feels both captured and elusive.

Shades of pale pinks, rose, lilac and deep purple for both the mayfly and their environment are the predominate soft colours that provide a restful, thoughtful setting. The landscapes are brushed with light, subtle and restful colours. The mayflower’s myriad shades feel elusive while their facial expressions draw the reader into their gentle one-day of life.

The text feels surreal yet realistic too as readers are drawn into Konomi’s one day experiences including ‘the silver droplets on a spiders web. The sweet melody of waking birds. The golden glow of the morning sun.’ Konomi, and her related companions, become part of the ‘waiting hum of a million twirling dancers.’ Text and illustrations are complementary in their gentle sounds and movements. Upon her departure, the mayfly leaves behind a ‘mother’s love’— an egg. Though her day has ended, we are assured she will ‘remember the best day of her life.’

Readers may be curious about mayflies. Their life space is extremely short, one or two days, or in some species, just a few hours. During their short life they focus solely on reproduction. The story opens by highlighting various lifespans. The flamingo lives some eighty years. The whale lives some two hundred years. The olive tree may live five thousand years. But the mayfly lives briefly in comparison. There is sense of sadness to this story. Patrick Guest explains that the book was inspired by his son’s serious medical diagnosis and how life expectancy can vary so widely.

A seemingly simple story, ‘Tiny Dancer,’ can be interpreted as a story about individual freedom, communal living, learning, growing, trusting, feeling, knowing, according to some commentary. It is a story worth examining more than once to experience these multiple levels.
