A young girl spends a year looking and listening for the bunyip her family tells her lives in the bend of the river. She finds no sign of it until the end of the year when she sees mysterious bubbles rising from deep in the river.
There is a strong sense of family in the book as each of the members is named and the little girl enjoys varied experiences with each of them. Readers will also have a clear impression of the importance of Country as the family fishes and hunts round the river. Each new activity occurs in a new month as the year passes and the seasons change.
The illustrations evoke both the landscape and the child’s search and her stillness as she ‘looks and listens’ is strongly conveyed. The authors are Sue Briggs, who identifies as Aboriginal, and Bev Harvey. The illustrator Donna Leslie is a member of the Gamiliroi people of New South Wales.
