This is a unique bilingual storybook in Kriol language and English. It tells the charming and funny story of Molly, that “beibiwan bigibigi” (baby pig). The narrator’s brother found her in the bush and brought her back but the dogs chased her a lot. She loves eating “Wit-Bik” (Weet-Bix) and grows to be very, very fat, turning the tables on the dogs. Children will enjoy the cheeky main character and the simple story. The co-location of the Kriol text and English translation make it easy to understand the story and compare the two languages. The publisher has produced an excellent animated version of the story on their website, read by the author in Kriol.
The story is told in Kriol by an Indigenous woman from Binjari, a community near Katherine, NT, and translated into English by a linguist from the Australian National University. The illustrations are done by the Binjari Buk mob, a group of Binjari women, in collaboration with a freelance illustrator.
