In this nonfiction picture book, Tarrah, a young Aboriginal girl of around seven years of age, recounts her life in Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory. Through Tarrah’s experiences, readers are introduced to the seasonal variation in flora and fauna in the area, such as goannas, waterlily flowers and file snakes, as well as traditional hunting, fishing and gathering methods.
Attention is drawn to the importance of Aboriginal elders and family members sharing their knowledge of language, traditions and the sights, smells and taste of the land with younger generations. Details of the six seasons of Kakadu feature in the back of the book. This book was written by Tarrah’s grandmother, Jane Christophersen, a traditional owner of Kakadu and elder of the Bunitj clan. The vibrant illustrations of daily life in the park are by the author’s daughter, renowned Indigenous artist Christine Christophersen.
